Your Summer Storage Checklist
Take inventory
- What can be stored for a few months?
- Winter coats, boots, hats, gloves — what winter clothing items are taking up space?
- Check the garage and shed for sleds, skates and winter sports equipment.
- Look for blankets and bedding you won’t use in warmer weather.
- Gather holiday decorations.
- Note any collectibles, antiques or sentimental items that would be better protected in a climate-controlled space.
Think about summer plans
- Is your guest room guest-ready?
- Are your kids coming back from college and you’ve been using their room for storage?
- Do you need space in the garage for new summer items like a grill or bikes?
- Is the patio set up? Are there items you could move off the patio?
- Are you going on vacation and want or need to store items long-term?
Figure out the right size unit
- 5×5 (25 square feet): Coats and blankets, skis.
- 5×10 (50 square feet): Small amounts of furniture, chairs.
- 10×10 (100 square feet): One-bedroom apartment size.
Pack
- Use plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes.
- Label everything.
- Wrap patio furniture cushions and fabric items to protect against moisture.
- Consider a climate-controlled unit for wood furniture, patio pieces, cushions, antiques, and anything sensitive to temperature.
- Elevate boxes off the floor using shelving or pallets.
- Leave some breathing room between items for air circulation.
