Rightsizing for Retirement: The Resources You Need to Make It Happen

Published On: July 3, 2026By

If you’ve been reading along with our rightsizing series, you’ve got the big picture, understand why rightsizing makes sense for retirement, and have a handy checklist to walk you through the process step by step. Now comes the part that can feel a little overwhelming, actually knowing where to turn for help.

There are many resources available. Whether you’re figuring out what to do with your things, finding professionals to help move them, or places to sell online, we put together some resources to get you started.

Before you dive into outside resources, know that Guardian Storage is here to support you every step of the way. Our size guide at guardianstorage.com helps you figure out exactly how much storage space you’ll need. Our friendly team at any of our Pennsylvania, Colorado or West Virginia locations is always happy to walk you through your options in person, too. And don’t forget, when you rent online, you get a free lock and our free moving truck (at participating locations) which can take a real load off when moving day arrives.

For Sorting and Selling

One of the trickiest parts of rightsizing is deciding what to do with everything you’re not taking with you. Here are a few places to start:

The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers connects you with certified professionals who specialize in helping older adults and families through exactly this kind of transition.

For items worth selling, look into local estate sale companies or online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or EstateSales.net. Many estate sale companies handle everything for you, for a percentage of the proceeds. It also might be time for a yard sale!

For donations, organizations like Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores accept furniture and home goods in good condition.

The Salvation Army and Goodwill often offer free pickup for large items, which can be a huge convenience when you’re managing a big move. Vietnam Veterans of America also offers free pickup for a wide range of household items.

For Finding Your New Home

If a 55+ or active adult community is on your radar, websites like Senior Housing Net help you search and compare communities.

For Your Financial, Legal and Strategic Considerations

Rightsizing often comes with financial decisions that deserve careful attention. A fee-only financial planner can help you think through the implications of selling your home, adjusting your budget for a smaller space and making the most of any equity you’ve built. The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, NAPFA, has a searchable directory of fee-only advisors near you.

For estate planning questions, an elder law attorney can be very helpful.

The AARP has a wealth of articles, guides and a community forum where people share their own rightsizing journeys.
