How to Use Temporary Storage During a Move

There are many reasons why people choose to rent a storage unit. The most common reason for using a storage unit is because of a move. Moving can be a very stressful undertaking, and many times, the timing just doesn’t line up as perfectly as you would hope. You may end up selling your home before you can move into your new house. Maybe you have to move away for a few months and you don’t want the hassle of bringing everything with you. Choosing to temporarily put your belongings in storage can be a huge relief in these instances. Knowing your items are somewhere safe while you handle your move is invaluable. Below are some of the main reasons you may decide temporary storage during a move is right for you.

When Should I Use Temporary Storage During a Move?

Staging Your Home

If you are selling your home, you will want to properly stage it for potential buyers. A well-staged home will typically spend less time on the market and will sell for a higher price. For potential buyers to envision themselves living in your house, you have to remove the items that make it feel like your home. Placing your belongings in temporary storage can clear up space, making your home feel bigger and allowing buyers to get a better idea of the space.

Moving with Short Notice

If you find yourself moving with short notice, storage can give you a little bit of wiggle room. You can keep all of your belongings in a storage unit while you stay with friends, family, or at a hotel until you find a new place that’s right for you.

Fixer-Uppers

If your new home is a fixer-upper, you may need to keep some of your items in storage for a while. This will give you plenty of room to complete your renovations. Plus, having your belongings in storage will keep them safe from all of the dust, paint, and potential damage.

Moving Temporarily

If you are in the military, a travel nurse, or any other type of job that requires you to move temporarily, consider temporary storage. Putting your items in a storage unit temporarily is more secure and usually more affordable than keeping a home or apartment that you don’t live in.

What Type of Storage Should I Get?

Climate-Controlled Storage

For the absolute best care of your belongings, you will want to choose interior climate-controlled storage. Humidity and temperature are kept consistent in these types of units, so it mimics the type of environment you would get in your home. This is perfect for furniture, memorabilia, electronics, antiques, artwork, records, and mattresses. Other options are great for more hardy items, but typically for a whole household’s worth of items, you will want to make sure everything is protected from humidity and moisture.

Drive-Up Storage Units

Another option for storing your belongings is drive-up storage units. These are perfect for storing vehicles, outdoor equipment, and anything you have in your shed or garage. Because these units are outside, they are more prone to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. For this reason, avoid putting anything in here that you wouldn’t store in your garage.

Interior Non-Climate Controlled Storage

Interior non-climate controlled storage may be the right solution for you if you are planning to store indoor items for a short period of time. While it doesn’t provide the same level of temperature and humidity control as a climate-controlled unit, it tends to be better than a drive-up storage unit. Being located inside protects your items more from moisture, dust, and dirt, and will result in less temperature fluctuation than an outdoor unit. Although it is still recommended to invest in a climate-controlled unit, this type of unit will still serve you well if you plan to store your household items short-term in storage.
