How to label and inventory your storage unit so you can actually find things later
Get a plan in place
- Think about what you’ll need to access most often:
- Seasonal/holiday decor
- Outdoor furniture
- Camping and sports gear
- Clothing/Jackets
- Blankets or bedding
- Bikes or quads
- Put rarely needed items toward the back
- Photographs or memories
- Heirlooms or antiques
- Documents or paperwork
- Fine china
- Cribs/strollers (might be keeping for a family member down the line)
- Artwork or other specific decor
- Leave yourself space to walk around the unit
Label everything and be specific
- Write specific content description on every box
- Label multiple sides of each box, not just the top
- Use permanent marker
- Choose your labeling method and stick with it
- Consider color coding by category
Keep a master inventory list
- Pick a list tool that works for you and will be easy to access
- Number or code each box as you pack and log the contents
- Share the list with family members who may also access the unit
- Take photos of the inside of your unit once it’s loaded
- Date your boxes, especially for documents and time-sensitive items
- Set expiration reminders in your inventory for items you won’t need to keep forever
Tips for move-in day
- Load the unit with your plan in mind
- Place heavier boxes on the bottom, lighter ones on top
- Download the Guardian Storage app for easy keyless entry
