Checklist: Home Gym Storage Checklist
Use this checklist for your home gym storage journey.
- Choose the right storage unit by measuring your equipment
- Select a climate-controlled unit to protect electronics, rubber and metal
- Consider accessibility and ease of taking things in and out
- Prep your equipment:
- Wipe down with a disinfectant cloth
- Inspect each piece for any existing rust, damage, or wear before storing
- Take photos of each item for your records before disassembly
- Gather all tools you’ll need for disassembly (Allen wrenches, socket set, screwdrivers)
- Collect bags and a marker for hardware storage
- Disassemble and organize
- Fold treadmill into stored position and secure the latch
- Break down weight bench into its smallest components
- Remove bar from squat or power rack
- Detach cables, seats, or arms from cable machines and multi-gyms
- Place all bolts, screws, and small hardware into labeled bags
- Tape hardware bags directly to their equipment
- Lay rubber gym flooring mats flat on the storage unit floor
- Wrap benches, upholstered seats and painted surfaces in blankets
- Store free weights and plates flat on the floor
- Group dumbbells and small weights in a sturdy bin
- Coil cables, bands, and jump ropes and store in a labeled box
- Pack smaller accessories (gloves, straps, foam rollers) in a clearly labeled bin
- Load and organize your unit:
- Place heaviest items (weights, racks, machines) at the back of the unit
- Keep items you may need during your transition near the front
- Leave a small walkway if you plan to access the unit regularly
- Stack lighter boxes and accessories on stable shelving
- Do a final walkthrough to make sure nothing is leaning or unstable
Remember: Do not store wet or damp equipment and avoid storing food, beverages, or anything that could attract pests near your equipment. Visit your unit periodically to check on conditions.
