5 Common Questions About Self Storage Units

Renting a self storage unit is different for everybody. What you need to store and what your neighboring unit needs to store might be vastly different. But, we tend to hear these five common questions the most often when people are inquiring about self storage, so we thought we’d put them in a blog for you. 

1. What size storage unit do I need? 

We have a guide for that right here. Units can range from 5×5 all the way up to 20×20. The smallest size is 25 square feet, so think about what would fit in a studio apartment. The largest size units are around 400 square feet and can hold the contents of a 4-5 bedroom home, a living room and a shed. At Guardian we offer units from 5×5 to 10×30. 

2. Do you have climate controlled units and do I need one?

Climate controlled units are designed to maintain a set temperature range of approximately 58-78 degrees using air conditioning and heat. Climate controlled units are available at all Guardian Storage properties. 

You need a climate controlled unit if you are storing sensitive items like wood furniture, electronics, documents, etc. 

If you are keeping your unit across multiple seasons, it’s a great idea to get a climate controlled unit so the temps outside don’t affect items inside. Our locations in PA, WV and CO definitely see varying temperature swings, so it’s vitally important to keep that in mind when choosing a unit.

3. Are self storage units safe and secure?

At Guardian, safety and security are always top priorities. Our facilities include state-of-the-art digital video surveillance systems, individually-alarmed units, motion detectors, smart sprinkler systems, electronic keypad access to gated properties, central station monitoring, and a full-time maintenance staff.

To best protect your unit, use a disc lock. By using a hardened steel disc or cylinder lock, you safeguard against bolt cutters. 

Getting insurance is also a way to protect your unit and you can do that through your facility or through your renter’s/homeowner’s policy.

Know what you have in your unit at all times. Take photos and keep a running list of everything you have stored. With regular checkups to your unit, you can keep an eye on anything that needs replacing or if you notice any issues, you can alert the staff immediately.

4. Do I have to sign a long-term commitment when I get a storage unit?

At Guardian, our rentals are month-to-month, so you can stay as long (or as little) as you need. If you plan to store items for an extended period, ask our staff about special long-term agreement incentives or promotions.

Many people choose to keep their units longer than expected due to the sheer convenience of the extra space. If you get a unit initially for one thing, you might find yourself finding new uses for it over and over again.

From seasonal storage, to camping or biking equipment, to furniture you aren’t sure where to put, to items you simply don’t have space for in your home but want to hold on to, a storage unit is really a great and affordable option. 

5. How much does a self storage unit cost?

The size of your unit will determine how much you pay monthly. Keep in mind there can be additional costs for insurance, admin fees, etc. 

To give you a general idea, standard base rates (before promotional discounts) vary by category across their locations.

• Small Units (5’x5′ to 5’x10′): Starting at $12 to $63 per month.
• Medium Units (10’x10′ to 10’x15′): Starting at $49 to $137 per month.
• Large Units (10’x20′ to 10’x30′): Starting at $115 to $288+ per month.

There are multiple convenient ways to pay, including a direct withdrawal from your bank account or via credit card, through the Guardian app, the online portal on our website, over the phone, and even in-person during regular business hours.
